Let me get this straight. You inspect a new restaurant in town and give it a clean bill of health even though the fire suppression system in the kitchen isn't hooked up. The owner didn't know this until the contractor installing the ceiling tiles noticed something not connected. If there was ever a fire in the kitchen and that oversight had not been caught, the City would most likely would have had one hell of a law suit on their hands. That gets you a promotion? It absolutely scares me that our new inspector will inspect places like the new hospital.

JOHN, GOOD FOR YOU...ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES ONE A LITTLE LOPSIDED, GLAD IT ONLY TOOK YOU FOUR AND A HALF YEARS TO FIGURE IT OUT, LOL. HAVE FUN! I just read this on Yahoo News and thought of YOU.

Why You Hate Your Job (and How to Hate It Less)
By Robin Madell | U.S.News & World Report LP http://news.yahoo.com/why-hate-job-hate-less

That sick, sinking feeling you have when you have to get up and go to work means that something is wrong. Unfortunately, you're far from alone if you experience a case of the heebie-jeebies every time your weekday alarm clock goes off. A 2012 study by Right Management showed that almost two-thirds of respondents from the United States and Canada expressed being unhappy at work. A wider-range 2011 study by Mercer of 30,000 workers worldwide found that close to 60 percent of workers wanted out of their current positions.

Even in the best-case scenario - such as the 2012 Conference Board report that found a slight uptick in satisfaction of U.S. employees - more than half of respondents still said they didn't like their jobs. That's a lot of office haters out there. If you're among them, here are some strategies to help you like your job better - or at least hopefully hate it a little less:

Mix business and pleasure. "Research shows that having even one friend at work greatly increases how happy people report they are about their jobs," says Dr. Janet Scarborough Civitelli, a workplace psychologist. "So ditch the unrealistic advice not to mix business and friendships and go ahead and make friends."

"Get acquainted with kind, civil colleagues," adds Christine Porath, assistant professor of management at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business and author of "The Cost of Bad Behavior." "Even the worst workplace snake pits always have a few good souls. Spend more time with them. Support them."

Manage your energy. "It is an unfortunate fact about the human brain that negative information is easier to recall, so make a conscious effort to focus on positive characteristics about your work," Civitelli says. "Every day, identify three things you like about your job."

"Choose and invest in relationships that are energizing to you," Porath says. "Positive connections at work fuel motivation, engagement, and well-being. De-energizing relationships, on the other hand, take a tremendous toll on people. They have four times the effect that energizing relationships do, highlighting the importance of managing your relationships."

Take 10 percent for you. "What inspires you and energizes you? Give yourself that gift for 10 percent of your work time each week," says Valerie Wright, a leadership expert. "Build time into your calendar for recharging during the day or week, block it out and keep that time precious to go and run, walk your dog, read, meet interesting colleagues or whatever recharges you."

"Find a project, a target market, or even a small inside-the-office issue that interests and excites you," agrees Nicole Witt, executive director of The Adoption Consultancy. "Volunteer to lead, or at least participate, in the effort. You'll enjoy your workdays more, and you may discover new opportunities or meet new people that lead to a positive change in your career."

Keep it up. "Even if you hate your job, continue doing your work," Porath says. "Keep moving forward. Short-changing your current organization is not in your long-term interests."

Porath suggests that you might reduce exposure to particular people or the organization depending on what's driving your hatred. You might:

--Stop attending optional social functions at work.

--Stop volunteering for tasks or committees that are peripheral to your job responsibilities.

--Limit your work to normal working hours.

Heed the message. "It is quite common in the U.S. for a person to be successful (as measured in money and title) and still hate their job," says Mary McCoy, founder of Work Point Average. "The good thing about hating a job is that the message is clear that you need to move on to a role where you can thrive. Teaching a person how to tolerate a hated job is handing them a career of depleted energy day after day after day." "Two things that reliably increase happiness are hope and sense of accomplishment," Civitelli says. "So if you really, really hate your job, create a plan for leaving it and then every month, make progress on your plan. Even if you can't leave right away, knowing you are closer is better than imagining yourself stuck forever."

The post does not state that businesses outside the Historic District in the city can not participate in the sign program. I appreciate John Aust pointing out the other businesses may be interested. The sign program is a work in progress.

Two issues are being pursued: 1. The cost of the signs and 2. Interest by businesses in particpating.

Other issues will certainly be identified in the process.

Sorry you are in Pain! The best thing for the pain is.(. mix meat tenderizer and apple cider vinegar)
Use your on judgement on the amount you mix and rub the affected area. be sure your tenderizer is melted.. You will smell like a pickle but it will be worth it. Just try it!

In 1967 I took my wife to see where I grew up - in the tropics, Panama Canal Zone. And made the mistake of oing what we did growing up, went fishing with my brother and let the sun burn me. Today I am a satisfied frequent client at Dermatoogy Associates because of the sins of my youth.

Chris, it appears that your letter to the editor is referring to 2 particular businesses who are selling hot dogs. I thought there were several places in Madison to get a hot dog. Why has the Madison Diner been singled out and who is the other business you are referring to?
They may not know Carolyn and the fact that she sells hot dogs (not that it should matter).

I agree with the majority and the free enterprise system that people should be allowed to have their businesses and market their products be it food or non food as long as they follow all the rules and regulations that go along with their industry. Business should not be about competition, it should be about providing a service or product to the community. The public can pick and choose where they want to go and spend their money.
Just Curious

DANG, now I want watermelon!!! Carolyn could add ice cold slices on the menu for summer, YUM.

It is good to have loyal customers and I think she does...plus, Madisonians are up for the challenge to keep her in business. May just need more word of mouth, I know lots of walkers who enjoy a hot dog before, after and (during LOL) their Lake Francis Experience.

Thanks Chris for caring and sharing!

Chris, Have you EVER, purchased something from Walmart? By doing so, you helped outsource jobs to China (loss of jobs here), and shut down locally owned businesses, that are just trying to feed their kids.

There are so many arguments to dispute your point, it doesn't make sense why you would even submit this?

I must apologize, but the first thing that came to mind on reading this was an old Lewis Black joke about a Starbucks being across the street from a Starbucks. Only in America, eh? Best of luck to all who endeavor to further themselves in business in Madison County. Maybe, in a round about way, this will benefit the Hot Dog Lady. Think of the free advertising and increased business as more folks stop in to check out what she's got going on for lunch because of this article!

Ok guys you are missing the point. No slander here I was merely stating what was being sold by others. Nancy is correct, my research tells me that Carolyn is required to have a county and state license to operate (Business) a little different then pushing watermelons.
Yes it is true Carolyn does not have employee's however unlike restaurants she does not have a full menu and doesn't except to make a killing, just hopefully enough to survive.
It is also true about McDonalds and BK and Advance and O’Reilly’s but can we really compare big chains to our local neighbors business ?? For all we know the big chains are down and out just using these store for right offs.
And just for the record, I also agree that competition is a good thing, but that's like saying it's ok for people to open 10, 12, 14 restaurants in our little down town area, there is a point where you can have too much of a good thing.
Would you think it's ok for a clothing store to start selling baby back ribs if they were right close to a BBQ house ???? I think not . If our local business's just show a little respect for each other I do believe they would all be much better off.

Ok guys you are missing the point. No slander here I was merely stating what was being sold by others. Nancy is correct, my research tells me that Carolyn is required to have a county and state license to operate (Business) a little different then pushing watermelons.

I Mis spoke I was just addressing the article. It's insulting the loops you jump through to own and run a business in the food business or any business . The Madison diner owners nice people they bought some of their equipment from me still making payments on it cause they needed help but saying they out to get anyone is excessive I wish her good luck as well as anyone that has commented on the article. But I will say this it is wrong to ask her to advertise for another business who ever that was. That's is just plain wrong. I'm sure it wasn't Jim from Madison diner. I'll be stopping by to get a hot doggy!!!

Chris, you make no sense at all! Burger King is less than a block away from McDonalds, we have gas stations across the street from each other all over town, Madison Hardware and Studstill are in close proximity, same thing for O'Reilly's, Advance Auto and Red Barn. I'm sure all these businesses have the same product as the competition. I agree with John, there's nothing wrong with competition. People will go where they want and choose what they like best. I don't believe there was any malice from these businesses you are complaining about. People are just trying to do whatever it takes to make a living, as you stated, the economy is bad, it's bad for everyone.

Chris. Be careful what you accuse someone of. It might be considered slanderous and prosecutable under the law. I have met these folks and I don't detect a vicious bone in them. Heck, they probably don't even know Carolyn. They just want to make a living like anyone else. Let the customer decide which hot dog they prefer. That's what competition is all about, and competition is what made this country great. Well, at least until now with our present government. Oh I forgot. They now employ at least four people that I know of. How many does Carolyn employ?

Thanks for bringing this to light Chris. To be sure, there is nothing inherently wrong with competition in a free market, but it sure would be nice if we looked out for each other every now and then, even if it costs us a few pennies. I don't really even eat the things, but next time I pick up my mail I'll be sure to get one of those Hot Dogs from Carolyn.
