Obama Going Back Home?

Obama stopped the White House tours even for little kids, due to the sequester which cuts less than 2% to the US budget of where is it now? 16 plus trillion dollars? Many people I know and hang around with haven’t taken a vacation in years, who can afford a vacation when you own your own small business?

Well, Obama and his family have decided to take a trip to his homeland Africa, not to see his Brother, Grandmother or anyone else in his family but originally to go on a safari. Someone with brains got to thinking “we don’t like firearms especially big bad icky ones that shoot big bad icky bullets”. And then, we may face Cheetahs, Lions, Tigers, and Bears, OH MY. And, all those really big horned animals that may also want to make lunch out of our President. Then, our Secrete Service may have to use one of those big bad firearms that shoot those big bad bullets to protect the President. Unlike how we protected those that gave their lives in Benghazi of course. So how would that look to his anti-gun Democrat and PETA backers? Imagine, actually using firearms in protecting the President and family. Therefore the 1st. family will be visiting some Island that housed Nelson Mandela for several years.

This little jaunt by the “Vacation in Chief” will cost the tax paying people of the United States over 100 Million dollars. If I had my druthers, I would rather spend those funds on training our military. Way back in the last century we had a war called “Second World War” where our service personnel would shoot 25 thousand rounds per enemy kill. The reason for the low ammunition count per kill is because firearms were pretty much a way of life in the US at that time. Shortly after the end of that war, (5 years) we went into Korea. The new boys were not as familiar with firearms and due to the lack of training; the ammunition count per kill went to 50 thousand. In Viet Nam the count went to (ya’ll ready for this?) 200 thousand rounds per kill. Four times the count used in WWII. With that said, the Marine snipers used 1.3 rounds per kill. Why the much lower count? (TRAINING)

Today? In Afghanistan? We are still burning up 200 thousand rounds per kill. Again, with that said, the Marine and now Army snipers are hitting 1.2 rounds per kill. Why the huge difference in rounds per kill? (TRAINING). One huge reason for lack of hits is that Firearms are no longer a way of life. Our children are taught from birth that firearms are bad; they jump up out of the box and kill people. Not that people must remove the firearm out of the box, load it, then go out to kill people. Therefore, it’s the firearm’s fault. Were it not for movies and games our new generation of young men wouldn’t know which end the bullet comes out of. Another reason for the high ammunition used for a kill is lack of training in shooting by our military.

But then, perhaps our President will decide to stay home in Africa that would also be a good thing for the American people. Anyway, now you know why we have a shortage of ammunition.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Don’t violate Florida’s Move Over Law. On June 12, 2013, violation of Florida’s Move Over Law led to the arrest of a child pornography suspect. Trooper William Craig from the Florida Highway Patrol’s Troop D in Brevard County stopped a driver on State Road 528 for failure to move over for a Brevard County Sheriff’s deputy who was on a traffic stop. The nervous driver provided a false name to Trooper Craig. Using Rapid ID, a handheld fingerprint scanner, Trooper Craig positively identified the driver as Brett David Bowyer, who was wanted in West Virginia for child pornography. The trooper arrested Bowyer and booked him into the Brevard County Jail.

The search continues for the two men missing since Saturday, June 15, off Horseshoe Beach, Dixie County, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials.

Thomas E. Morrison (DOB 12/22/49) of Jacksonville, and Glen S. Harris (DOB 03/23/43) of Keystone Heights, Clay County, are still missing after their boat overturned in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday, approximately 14 miles offshore of Horseshoe Beach.

Morrison and Harris, along with Frank DiPaula (DOB 03/01/35) and Thomas Grant (DOB 04/14/46), both of Keystone Heights, went out Saturday morning to go offshore fishing in a 1978, 21-foot Wellcraft center console open sport fisher.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday, FWC vessels began looking for the boat, which had been reported as overdue. FWC officers searched overnight with assistance from U.S. Coast Guard air assets. The overturned boat was found approximately 14 miles offshore at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday by a U.S. Coast Guard search plane. DiPaula and Grant were with the vessel and an FWC vessel rescued the two men.

FWC officers continued the search for Morrison and Harris until sundown on Sunday.

“We are continuing throughout the day to search for the two missing men,” Capt. John Burton, acting regional commander for the FWC, said Monday, June 17.

The overturned vessel was recovered and towed back to the Horseshoe Beach marina by Sea Tow.

“Our hearts go out to the families of the missing men,” Burton said.

The FWC is continuing the investigation into the accident.

June 18th, 2013 marks a defining moment within the history of the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. During the hours of 10am to 2:30pm, the Chapter will welcome 100 students from the local Springwood Elementary and Ruediger Elementary Schools for the Chapter’s first annual Kids Cross.

Providing an extensive array of child-friendly disaster preparedness/health activities and community interaction, this event is designed to extend the Chapter’s reach into the younger generation and prepare our children in the event of emergency situations. Educational activities include first-aid training, fire, water and pet safety, hurricane preparedness and germ awareness, among many others.

Qdoba Mexican Grill has graciously sponsored this program, providing a full lunch and coupons for future free meals to both children and volunteers. Qdoba’s tremendous support for Kids Cross has proven to be integral to the success of this program.

In full form and force, the City of Tallahassee Police & Fire Departments will be present with several officers and emergency vehicles in the Chapter’s exterior courtyard, occurring at 1:30pm. Picture these children’s sure smiles as they play alongside their heroes – our local firefighters and police officers – while learning of why they are integral to the community’s safety. The City of Tallahassee Animal Shelter will also assist in providing pet safety and pet first aid presentations.

Inquiries regarding this program may be directed to Eric Morgera, Community Outreach Coordinator, Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, by calling (850) 402-5616.

For Immediate Release: Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Free Foreclosure Defense Program Extended Through July 31st

Attorney General’s Grant Expands Temporary Availability of Free Legal Aid for Homeowners

Jacksonville, FL – Three Rivers Legal Services’ foreclosure assistance program – which has assisted over two hundred homeowners with their housing issues since the program began in March – has been extended through the end of July 2013.

The foreclosure assistance program – fully-funded by the Attorney General’s Office through a settlement with the country’s largest mortgage companies – was originally set to expire on June 30th, but has been extended through the end of July 2013. Housing Attorneys at Three Rivers Legal Services are hopeful that the extension will enable them to serve more struggling homeowners of low-to-moderate income who would otherwise go without assistance.

“Three Rivers Legal Services is happy to have an opportunity to extend our services at this time to a greater number of homeowners in dire straits and those who are continuing to struggle during this economic downturn and recovery,” said Allison Thompson, Executive Director of Three Rivers Legal Services. “We are grateful to be a part of the solution.”

Free legal aid services are now available to any Florida resident who owns their primary home and meets certain income requirements (low-to-moderate income, within 275% of federal poverty). Any eligible resident with questions or concerns about the foreclosure process should not hesitate to call to get advice, even if no formal action has been taken.

Lawyers and advocates at Three Rivers Legal Services are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. to address a wide range of housing-related issues including foreclosure defenses, alternatives to foreclosure, and how to lower mortgage payments.

Three Rivers Legal Services offers this assistance to qualified homeowners in seventeen counties throughout North Florida. Individuals who could benefit from these free services should contact Three Rivers Legal Services to schedule a consultation as soon as possible. Funding is limited and expires on July 31st, 2013.

The Florida Guides Association on June 12 honored two employees of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) for their conservation efforts.

Capt. Pat Kelly, Florida Guides Association president, presented FWC Officer Bryce Phillippi with the “Trained Eyes Coastwatchers” Officer of the Year award.

Wes Porak, a biologist with the FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, received the Capt. Phil Chapman Conservation Award.

Phillippi’s passion for many saltwater activities and desire for protecting Florida’s outdoors inspired him to become an FWC officer in 2010, after serving as a reserve officer for three years.

“Phillippi began working in Hillsborough County in 2012. During one of my first weeks as his supervisor, he asked me if he could work on his day off to investigate someone he suspected was illegally working commercial blue crab traps,” said FWC Lt. George Wells. “His hard work and determination paid off and he was able to catch the man and stop him from doing further harm to the resource and local economy.”

Phillippi protects not only the resources, but the boating public as well. In addition to cases made for undersized sheepshead, selling oysters without a saltwater products license, possession of goliath grouper and more, he has been involved in several search-and-rescue missions and boating accident investigations.

“Bryce always assists the boating public when they are in need and strives to teach them about safe boating,” Wells said. “His can-do attitude goes above and beyond the call of duty.”

Porak is the first freshwater biologist to receive the Capt. Phil Chapman Conservation Award. He has spent more than three decades as a state biologist contributing to the conservation of black bass and other freshwater fish for the FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.

“Porak’s conservation efforts for freshwater fisheries and his mentoring of young biologists leave a legacy that will survive long beyond his retirement from the FWC,” said Jason Dotson, leader of the Institute’s Freshwater Fisheries Research Section. “I can say without any hesitation that the FWC is a better organization, and the state of Florida is a better place to fish because of his career contributions to conservation.”

Porak was also honored earlier this year with the Rich Cailteux Award by the Florida Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. The award recognizes individuals who have maintained a long-term commitment to research, management and/or conservation of Florida fisheries and aquatic resources.

The holster goes under the shirt directly on the body for concealed carry. The handle fits in the pook of the shirt directly under the arm pit.

It works with T shirts, Polo shirts, V neck shirts, sweat shirts and can be used with a button up dress shirt if the top button is undone. Approximately %80 of the weight of the weapon disappears because the weight is spread out evenly on the body instead of riding on one spot. This makes the weapon feel comfortable to carry.

This universal holster will fit any semi auto up to a .45 cal. Colt 1911 and J frame revolvers. Some .22′s, .25′s, and Derringers may have to use the magazine pouch if the weapon is to small and goes inside the pouch out of reach. The men’s holster and the women’s holster are the same material. The only difference is that the men’s holster is 5 inches wide and the women’s holster is 4 inches wide. The trigger is secure down in the pouch. When reaching in to draw the weapon, you will be grabbing only the handle portion.

5. Citizen’s Participation:

a. Cindy Vees, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, provided a Chamber Operations update.

b. Madison Antiques’ Cindy Poire briefed the Commission about May 3, 2014’s The Fancy Flea – Vintage Home & Garden Market. The Commission amended the agenda to consider her request to hold the event in Madison, then approved her request. The event will involve closing off a portion of Range and side streets.

c. Jay Lee of the Madison Lions Club briefed the Commission about the club’s July 4’s God and Country Celebration.

d. Michael Briggs requested the city’s assistance in addressing speeding vehicles on Northeast Horry.

6. City Manager Bennett updated the City Commission about city staff’s position concerning the Wardlaw-Smith-Goza Mansion. Bennett said, as city manager, he backed away from a joint city-county proposal regarding the future of the mansion because of the short term and long term impact he felt it would have on the city’s budget. He said he felt the city already had too many other budget needs without taking on new ones involving the mansion. No action was taken by the Commission. The mansion is owned by North Florida Community College.

7. City Manager Bennett updated the Commission about the USDA grant/loan project to renovate the second floor of the Police facility. He said Architect Will Rutherford has provided USDA a proposed $416,591 construction contract that’s under budget. The contract is with low bidder Little & Williams. USDA will review the contract and hopefully approve it. Once approved by USDA, the contract will be placed on the City Commission’s July agenda for review, potential approval and signing. A next major step is a pre-construction meeting with USDA and the contractor to execute a Notice to Proceed. The project total is a $500,000. It involves a 75 percent grant and 25 percent loan from USDA.

8. City Manager Bennett briefed a memo from Police Chief Calhoun regarding Traffic Regulation Signage. Chief Calhoun is working with citizens in the northeast quadrant concerning lowering speed limits to 25 and 20 miles per hour in the following areas: Fraleigh Drive (between Livingston St. and Horry Ave.) from 30 to 25 mph; Fraleigh Drive (between Horry Ave. and Clayton Street) from 30 to 20 mph; and Horry Ave., (between Livingston Ave. and Clayton St.) from 30 to 20 mph. The Commission recommended lowering all three to 20 mph.

Chief Calhoun also will proceed with installing a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Marion and Crane. This will be on a trial basis. The purpose of the four-way stop sign is to better control traffic on Crane that includes traffic from the hospital construction, new charter school, North Florida Community College, commercial traffic from nearby US 90, and residential traffic.

9. The City Commission also was briefed about Chief Calhoun’s proposal on where to establish golf-cart crossings: On South State Road 53 near Rutledge and Duval (SR 53); North State Road 53 near Marion and Washington (SR 53); and US 90 near Range and Base (US 90). The Commission will review the proposed crossings at its July meeting.

10. The City Commission named two new recreational parks: Jesse Solomon Recreational Park located on Martin Luther King Jr., Drive and Sumpter James Recreational Park located on Jeanette Circle.

11. City Manager Bennett briefed the Commission about expenditures that can be paid for through the use of the city’s Water and Wastewater Impact Fees. Use of the impact fees means the city will not have to use General Fund dollars or utility Enterprise Fund dollars.

12. The City Commission approved the renewal of the city’s Law Enforcement Liability Insurance with Public Risk Insurance Agency (PRIA).

13. The City Commission approved the following priorities for FY13-14: First tier – (1) Wastewater; (2) Water; (3) Streets; (4) Parks (specifically the park on Martin Luther King Jr., Drive); and (5) Sidewalks. Second tier includes Facilities Maintenance; ITT Superfund Site; and Information Technology.

14. The City Commission approved rescheduling its July meeting to July 15 from July 9.

15. The City Commission approved the designation of Mayor Rayne Cooks as the primary Voting Delegate and Mayor Pro Tem Judy Townsend as the alternate Voting Delegate to represent the city at the annual Florida League of Cities Conference in Orlando Aug. 15-17, 2013.

16. The City Commission approved a Corrective QuitClaim Deed for Martha Hart Cherp.

17. City Manager’s Report:

a. Briefed the Commission about criteria city staff uses to address ordinance violations such as overgrown yards and dilapidated structures.

b. Briefed the Commission about current and past efforts to address violations and also briefed the Commission about the results of those efforts that involve improving the city’s appearance.

c. Informed the Commission the FY13-14 budget preparation is underway with department heads required to submit capital-outlay requests by close of business June 12.

d. Informed the Commission of an effort to ask civic clubs to contribute funds toward the purchase of a second fountain for Lake Frances.

e. Informed the Commission that Police Chief Calhoun will produce a detailed crime report that city staff hopes will be published in the local newspapers.

18. Meeting adjourned.

“Par for the Corpse” is being produced as a partnership effort between the Rural Area Theatre and Madison Country Club. “This is an excellent occasion for the community to come out and see the improvements that have been made at the club,” said Sammy Hicks, MCC president. “We are thrilled to bring this production to such a beautiful venue,” continued Jessica Webb, a partner in the RATT.

Performances begin Thursday, June 20 with Dessert Night at 7:30 PM. Friday, June 21 is a full dinner theater performance with prime rib being served at 6:30 PM. Saturday, June 22features a complete dinner with a delicious seafood buffet being offered up at 6:30 PM. The encore performance is Sunday afternoon with a complete southern feast being served at 1:30 PM for your enjoyment.

MADISON, FL – Each year North Florida Community College students who participate in the TRiO Student Support Services Program select an outstanding instructor. This year’s 2013 Student Support Services Instructor of the Year is NFCC English Instructor Rose Knox.

NFCC students presented Knox with the award at the Student Support Services Faculty Appreciation Reception which is held annually and organized by students who participate in the program. Students also wrote thank you notes to different NFCC instructors sharing what they, the student, found beneficial from the instructors’ classes and teaching methods.

“The faculty here at NFCC are among the best I have worked with,” said Suzie Cashwell, Director of Student Support Services at NFCC. “They balance the rigor of academics with the humanity of first generation students. This combination is leading to success and we want instructors to see this.”

Knox was specifically recognized by students for offering a creative and interactive learning environment where students are engaged, involved and interested in learning. “Creating life-long learning is my goal,” said Knox. “If students are enjoying the process, learning becomes a joyful experience!”

Contact with this amoeba is rare, but targets a person’s brain and usually results in death. Adverse health effects on humans can be prevented by avoiding nasal contact with the waters, since the amoeba enters through the nasal passages.

Though there are only 123 reported cases since 1962, Naegleria fowleri or “brain-eating amoeba”, can cause Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) disease which usually leads to death once infected.

As a precaution, health officials recommend the following:

Avoid water-related activities in bodies of warm freshwater, hot springs, and thermally polluted

Please note exposure to the amoeba may also occur when using neti pots to rinse your sinuses of cold/allergy-related congestion with unfiltered tap water. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises you to clean these devices thoroughly after every use and filter the water before placing it in the pot.

If you experience any of these symptoms after swimming in any warm body of water, contact your health care provider immediately: headache, fever, nausea, disorientation, vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, loss of balance, or hallucinations.

My daughter and I were on a rush trip from Huntsville, AL to Melbourne, Fl to see my sister before she died. With the help of the terrific people in your community, we got there on Thurs, she was under morphine and she died on Sat, but I did get to hold her. I was working in my yard in AL when we were notified of my sister being so ill, and we got in the car and left. Guess I had poison ivy on my hands. It broke out that evening.

I had poison ivy around my eye, and it was itching so much that we stopped in your city on Thursday, saw a druggist, who phoned an optometrist, (Ms Hill, I think) got me in very quickly, and Cvs filled the prescription. The medicine stopped the terrible itching and I am fine. Thank you very much. Everyone was great in your beautiful city, and taking care of my medical problem so quickly helped get us to Melbourne that evening..

Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Saturday night June 1, 2013 at 11:30 pm Deputies were dispatched to the area of Mango East of Lee on US 90 to investigate a complaint of a person riding around the area in a truck shooting several rounds from a rifle.

Cpl. Mike Maurice along with Sgt. Dennis Pitts responded to Mango. As Cpl. Maurice was traveling down Mango he passed a Dodge Dakota truck headed toward US 90. Cpl. Maurice turned around to make contact with the truck however the driver later identified as Eric Duane Kirkland of Jacksonville, FL sped off at a high rate of speed.Cpl. Maurice initiated pursuit and informed Sgt. Pitts that the Dodge was headed toward US 90. Sgt. Pitts deployed spike strips in attempt to terminate the pursuit but was unsuccessful as Kirkland was able to avoid the spikes.Once the pursuit reached US 90, Kirkland turned West and continued to flee at more than 100 miles per hour. The pursuit entered the Town of Lee and Kirkland turned South onto CR 255 toward Interstate 10. Other responding Deputies were approaching the pursuit when Kirkland decided to pull over. Deputies conducted a felony takedown and Kirkland was arrested without further incident. A search of the truck located an AR 10 .308 caliber Assault Rifle on the front seat next to where Kirkland had been sitting. The rifle was fully loaded and chambered with the safety off. Several extra rounds of ammunition were also recovered.During further investigation it was learned that Kirkland had met a female via the internet who lived in the area of Mango. Kirkland admitted that he drove from Jacksonville to “terrorize” the female.

Deputies identified the female and located more than 30 spent .308 rounds in the dirt road near her residence. It did not appear that the home was struck by any bullets.

LIVE OAK, FL, June 7, 2013 – The Suwannee River Water Management District (District) Land Management Review Team met recently to tour the District’s conservation lands and to evaluate the District’s natural systems management practices. The team is made up of landowners, biologists, foresters, parks and recreation specialists, environmentalists, and others.

The review team met at District headquarters to receive a briefing about the geology and hydrology of the Alapaha River Basin, the primary focus of the tour. Then the group toured the District’s Holton Creek and Jennings Bluff tracts, where they observed how the District manages, protects, and restores natural resources as required by state law.

At the Holton Creek Tract in Hamilton County, the team reviewed the treatment of invasive species, the protection of rare and endangered species, and timber harvesting activities. They also learned about recreational opportunities on the tract, including equestrian, hunting, and hiking opportunities that include nine miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail. The team also saw that Holton Creek features a large concentration of sink holes, which leads to significant interaction of surface water and groundwater.

At the Jennings Bluff Tract in Hamilton County, the group heard about how the District protects and restores natural communities. They discussed the benefits of prescribed fire to restore and enhance wildlife habitat and natural plant communities. They also saw firsthand how timber harvesting activities fit in with management goals. The team learned that the Jennings Bluff Tract includes the Dead River Sink, a unique hydrologic feature in which water in the Alapaha River flows underground through a sink hole and rises back to the surface 19 miles downstream.

The Land Management Review Team tours District property annually, reviews land management objectives, and scores the District on its management practices to determine whether the District meets, not meets, or exceeds the objectives outlined in its land management plan. Their feedback will be presented to the District’s Governing Board at an upcoming Board meeting.

The purpose of the group is to determine whether the District is fulfilling its statutory obligations, complying with governing board policy and meeting specific land management objectives. The District is statutorily required to get feedback from local citizens and state agencies on its natural systems management practices each year. Invitations are sent to local governments, agencies, organizations and citizens in order to form the review team.

Anyone interested in joining the review team may contact Pennie Flickinger at the District at 386.362.1001 or 800.226.1066 (FL only).

As much “smack talk” as I’ve done in the last year about fitness, I decided I better hold myself accountable.

It took me about 3 months to lean out to this point; 2 months and 1 week of the Insanity workout series, very low starch carbs, no sugar and no weightlifting or bike riding.

After completing the Insanity I rode my bike 5 days a week on extreme hills and incorporated a light weightlifting routine.

I still have a little more leaning out to do and I will. Insanity was the most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done. After sitting in front of a computer for over three years, my body didn’t appreciate the leaping and other crazy moves in the Insanity workout. The pain paid off though. My body adapted and I got stronger.

The Insanity DVD series can be found on Amazon.com . I highly recommend it.

If I can do it, you can do it.

FYI – I was sucking my stomach in hard on the 170lb pic.
