Well. Perhaps I was abit harsh there. I have _THE_ utmost respect for LE. So, I apologize and kindly ask the LE who read this forum to PLEASE consider the economic harm that they might cause local people who are found with some minor violation. (I’m not exactly saying take it easy on the ones who are knowingly DWLSR or driving in violation of the FR laws) but what I am suggesting is to not sweat the small stuff. I have the utmost respect for the people that have to put that uniform on everyday and deal with normal people along with some of the nastiest people on the face of the earth but I also acknowledge that they choose to put that uniform on. Simply put I ask my local LE to please not be overzealous in your enforcement efforts. ZERO TOLERANCE DUI enforcement is one thing… Busting the average citizen for walking on the grass is another. (zero tolerance equipment checking) Even our state patrol has rules they have to abide by in the course of a checkpoint of any kind. (checkpoint for DUI is for that and paperwork only and _NOT_ equipment This is per the FHP rulebook.

  2. Local says:

The “special turnaround” was put in for EMS and Fire apparatus to be able to turn around. They can’t just cut through the median as easily as a patrol car

  3. Richard Noggin says:

    @ same ole,

“How long did it take them to use our gas tax money and pave themselves a “Special turnaround lane for official use only?” I’m getting alittle bit tired of the local pettit tyrants.”

I am pretty sure no one on the local level had anything to do with the new “official use only” turn around near the River Rd. overpass. That was the state’s choice just like all the other work being done on I-10. Our local gas tax money is being used to pave the roads in all the dump sites around the county.

  4. Richard Noggin says:

State law requires the location of the check points to be posted in local media. Additionally, they can only be conducted in certain locations. Locations must be in areas with decent lighting, parking, etc. for safety reasons.

Greedy Greedy Greedy. “Stick our finger in the pie”
This isn’t about drunks… it’s about not being outdone (who has the bigger $%#@?)
Just like when John chased that drunk to live oak…
How long did it take them to use our gas tax money and pave themselves a “Special turnaround lane for official use only?” I’m getting alittle bit tired of the local pettit tyrants. We need cops and we need CLEAR AND IMMEDIATE SAFETY VIOLATIONS (bald tires, brake lights out, rear end of the car dragging the ground etc.) OFF the streets BUT we don’t need them nitpicking about EVERYTHING…
Isn’t it nice to sit here and watch our local magistrate milk the people for all the money it can???
Think the speed limit has something to do with this??? Hmmmm……

  6. What the ???? says:

Attn all bank robbers, the police will staking out Capitol City on tues from 10-12, the speed trap will be at the 253 mile marker and there will also be a raid on the drug house located at 123 ABC street at 2am thurs morning.
Sorry, I just had to do it

  7. Adam says:

I always thought the early morning rush hour (drunk rush hour, not weekday regular commute) started after midnight, not before. Why not end this at 2 or 3 in the morning instead.

  8. the peasant says:

    @LTML,

Actually the peasant is eating a great big bowl of Blue Bell Vanilla Ice Cream as he/she types this message. But, I do have a pretty good understanding for human nature and revel in being able to punch the button of hypocrites and assorted do gooders.

    cheers,

  9. LTML says:

Peasant, perhaps you should lay off while posting so many whiny and liberal responses.

  10. the peasant says:

how can drinking alcohol and driving be a “large problem” in a dry county? Must be a flaw in one of our dominate hypothesis.

In all honesty, does anyone believe alcohol is the real problem? For thousands of years this stuff has been consumed by folks searching for a little relief from the existential angst and other uncertainties of life. In my life time I have never witnessed such signs of stress in the mannerisms and eyes of those I come into contact with. Lots of folks need a crutch just to get through. Be thankful if you are among the stong. I know some turn to Jesus, others to rock and roll, but for me a little sip does the trick.

My suggestion is take a drink, when the demons appear, but don’t drive. I will provide a testimonial to those who question this suggestion, cause a drink of elixir does indeed serve to hold off the demons which inhabit our world.

Dang, it’s 5 pm. on Friday!

    Cheers,

  11. Ol' Boy says:

    Hey Mouse,

How many more people haft to die in alcohol related accidents before you consider drinking and driving a problem? Maybe if someone in your family was killed by a drunk driver you might think we have a problem? Hope you didnt spend to much time typing that comment b/c it really makes no sense.

  12. skidrow says:

Why is it posted of where the check points are going to be, that only gives people who drink and drive the places to avoid.

  13. The Voice says:

You do realize these aren’t my words, right?

  14. A Nonny Mouse says:

    As we know?

So we have to take your word for it? If you are going to suggest that the people of Madison have a “large problem” then I would think you would be able to provide some data to back up the claim. Just saying it doesn’t make it so.

I take offense at that comment. Further, it in no way justifies DUI “checkpoints”. The supreme court has been wrong before and the issue is far from clear!

Citizens should DEMAND rational justification for all intrusive police action. We desperately need our cops, but we need policies that do not encroach on constitutional liberties.

That said, good job on posting the location of the checkpoint. :)
