THOMAS E. “TOM” STONE announces his candidacy for the office of Madison County Judge being vacated upon the retirement of the Honorable Wetzel Blair. Tom has lived and practiced law in Madison for 36 years. His legal experience has emphasized family law, probate, real property and criminal law. He has served as a public defender for Madison County since 1984.

His mother, Connie Cowart Skinner, was born and raised in Madison. Tom was born in Jacksonville and graduated from Miami Palmetto High School. He attended the University of Florida where he was awarded an Army ROTC scholarship, was a member of the Dean’s List and was designated as a Distinguished Military Graduate. Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. During his four years in the military, he served in the Republic of South Vietnam as the communications officer for a combat engineer battalion. During his Viet Nam tour, he was promoted to the rank of Captain.

Upon leaving active duty he attended law school at the University of Miami where he was again recognized as a member of the Dean’s List. In 1976, upon graduation from law school with a Juris Doctor Degree and admission to the Florida Bar, he opened his practice in Madison.

Mr. Stone has been an active member of his community and the bar. He is the recipient of the 2002 Award from the Florida Supreme Court and the President of The Florida Bar for pro bono legal service in the Third Judicial Circuit. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Three Rivers Legal Services and has received several commendations from that organization for his voluntary services to citizens in need of legal assistance. He has served as President of the Third Circuit Bar Association and as Chairman of the Third Circuit Bar Grievance Committee.

In 1980 he was appointed to serve as a trustee of North Florida Community College and was subsequently reappointed for two addition terms. He was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1989. In 1991, that college awarded Mr. Stone its Distinguished Service Medallion.

In 2003 he was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of Madison County Memorial Hospital and has been recognized by that board for his service.

He is married to the former Debra Burns of Madison. Their six children, Nancie Pritchard, Sara Stone, Meredith McCone, Jennifer Jordan, Brandon Seago and Laura Seago attended Madison County High School. They have three grandchildren, Annabelle Pritchard, Nate Seago and Kennedy Seago.
