Obama Acts to Spare Many Youths from Deportation
6-16-12
President Barack Obama suddenly eased enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws Friday, an extraordinary step offering a chance for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants to stay in the country and work.

Obama is the only guy up there who can compromise, jj. The flaws in AHCA are there because of that willingness. There are people in Madison who don’t agree with you.
Come on now. From the very first day of his presidency, the leadership of the other party was announcing as its goal to make sure he was “a failure.”. How would you like to try to get something done in that vicious and unpatriotic atmosphere? Time was when people knew how to work together for the good the country instead of trying to carry out personal vendettas. That mixed up priority will destroy us, is destroying us.
Nobody should be accusing him of “politics” when they have been, are, and intend to maneuver also. Thing is that this stuff happens in elections. It’s when the elections never end that there is a problem. In case you haven’t noticed it has been one continuous battle in DC for the last four years with the Republican leadership refusing to support measures they originally suggested, just because the object of their hatred says they were good ideas.
I am amazed that there are people who are so vulnerable to propaganda that they can’t see that. Or maybe they can see it, and they just won’t admit it. :/
it is merely about votes dem or rep i dont think goverment should set the standard of individual morals or compassion. looking for loopholds in the laws is permited. by not for the president. that is how obama is separating the nation, just to get relected.
L.n it was clever joke. I know mr. Catrons background. Just a way of being a smart.ss. Christian morals are not underminded. Obama is not a goood democrat to represent Madison. He just is talking. Like a big politiion . If we kept our faith and morals separate. From compassionate fads we could do all right by madion standards politics really undermine them i just said it wrong.we are coming to a point
Of breaking or dividing as whole obama has made that possible were there is non common ground could you agree i voted clinton and bush
From 1966 until 1996, I taught at North Florida Junior College. Courses included Western Civilization, U. S. History, American Government, State and Local Government, Humanities Philosphy, Sociology, Social Problems, Introduction to Education, Management, and numerous courses by newspaper.
In 1996 I was asked to become the Director of Counseling and Testing. In 1998 I was asked to become Director of Admissions and Records. I retired in 2003.
My goal was to help students to be successful in their college work. Emphasis was placed first on the student, second on the discipline (i.e., history, political science etc.) and third on the institution.
My focus was on ensuring that NFJC students were successful in life.
JJ: Tee hee. Very likely Mr. Catron sounds like a professor because he was one before he retired. Mr. Catron, didn’t you use to teach history and civics at NFCC?
I don’t think that abortion is a particularly compassionate act either, but, of course, that has nothing to do with the President’s order. You can go there if you like and enjoy yourself, but I am sticking to what I said.
Allow me to clarify yet again (sigh): JJ said that compassion is “undermining” morals. Both are of God, and so setting them in opposition to each other is, at best, a serious misunderstanding of a truly Christ-like quality that is (at least) one of the highest standards for human conduct ever conceived and at worst a black nefarious lie.
The introduction of abortion, atheists, immigration, Muslims, terrorism, conservatives, liberals, Obama, Romney, racism, welfare, jobs, Tea Party, individual mandate, the economy, states’ rights, or anything at all that you can think of does not change that statement one iota.
give me a break CATRON you sound like a professor at a college i didnt attend OBAMA did that to get votes and you over thought it it is not that complicated were is our moral personal and religious
In 1982, the Supreme Court of the United States in Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202, that public schools were prohibited from denying immigration students access t a public education. The case came to the Supreme Court on appeal from the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
The second paragraph of the opinion outlines the issue:
Since the late 19th century, the United States has restricted immigration into this country. Unsanctioned entry7 into the United States is a crime, U.S.C. 1325, and those who have entered unlawfully are subject to deportation, U.S.C. 1251 (1976 ed. and Supp. IV). But despite the existence of these legal restrictions, a substantial number of persons have succeeded in unlawfully entering the United States, and now live wihtin various states, including the state of Texas.
The plan. presented by President Barak Obama on June 15, protects, conditionally, the children of illegal; immigrants because they are seen as a unique group of innocents. Plyler v. Doe established this reasoning as a foundation for law and public policy.
Since 2001, a series of immigration reforms have come before Congress, often with bipartisan support. Several times, a DREAM Act bill has come close to passing in Congress, but none has ever been enacted; the latest version died more than a year ago, evidently prompting President Obama to issue his plan.
Under Obama’s plan, illegal immigrants under the age of thirty who were brought to the United States as children and have certain other qualifications, suchy as a high-school diploma and a clean police record, can apply for work permits and the right to live free from the fear of arrest.
The solution to the presence of millions of illegal aliens has been apparent for years. Congress needs to establish a legal, temporary-work program, legalize the law–abiding workers who are already here, and link that amnesty to sustainable enforcement measures for business and at the border. Both President George W. Bush and Barack Obama attempted encourage Congress to enact a solution.
The Obama plan employs prosecutorial discretion. The Congress should do what President Reagan was able to encourage the Congress to do with Social Security and with Immigration Regulations—to work toward a bipartisan solution to the problem of unlawful aliens. Virtually all of the undocumented persons who come into the United States seek employment opportunities.
Immigration history shows clearly the attitudes at the time. The United States continues to be a nation which affords opportunity to many—the Bracero history—1942-1964–brought individuals to the United States to work. Economic opportunity has been the drawing card.
If we want to find a proximate solution to the “illegal alien” problem, we need to act in our national interest. There are millions of illegals in this nation. Addressing the problem can enforcing laws that prohibit hiring illegal aliens. The cost of enforcing the law is the major problem.
It is easy to assert that illegals vote; it is harder to document. Doing the “right thing” is often unpopular. Doing what is expedient for the moment can be popular.
How willing are we to spend the money to build a way that will effectively keep illegals out of the United States? Where will the money come from? And what will be accomplished—just maybe it is time to address the issue rather than avoid it. Congress can act…a bill can be introduced in the House of Representatives or in the Senate. The President can not introduce a bill…he can ask a member of Congress to do so.
Remember jj that as a liberal they may use Jesus to claim compassion and George Bush to blame for Obama’s dismal record. Under the guise of compassion they shred the constitution because it compassionate to give to the poor and take from the rich. The founders believed in a moral order and the civil society, however they also believed it was not the responsibility of government to legislate what they considered moral. The fallacy of liberalism: Jesus was compassionate but do we think he is supportive of the murder of thousands of unborn babies? Jesus would have gave citizenship to all, but do you think if he was here now he would follow due process to do so?
You were the one who brought in “morals.” I merely answered your charge that “compassion has undermined our morals.” It most assuredly does not, and countering that (corrupt) spin is about 100,000x+ more important than whether or not one agrees with the President’s action.
uhhh here we go throw religion into the discussion again. claim god is backing your point so no one can disagee with you. then if you disagree you seem like a atheist. if you cant debate a statement dont take that route.
we were talking about the president restriction lifts.
For a Christian, compassion does not “undermine” morals. Jesus had both morals and compassion. The perhaps unintended result of spinning words like “tolerance” and “compassion” to be in conflict with morality is to undermine Christian principles and replace them with the rigid and judgmental attitudes of the Pharisees. The Pharisees thought they were oh so right also. But Christians, at least, know what the Pharisees did.
myths really. we as a nation dont look to be pc. compassion has underminded our morals. fact nothing can take away are freedoms. except people that dont respect them. politics always change fact. get on the front lines. and contribute.and understand. dont be so liberal and see another side 30 percent of madison pays taxes. 70 percent hopes for the goverment to take care of them. and want hand outs. check your demograghics. lets give the future some hope i know i will.
It’s a myth that aliens take jobs away from residents. Aliens take jobs that Americans won’t take, mostly. The only time this is not true is when an American company moves off shore. Those jobs ARE lost, and they are often the kind of jobs that Americans WOULD take.
mr. catron you are correct as well as l.n. but this is not the 60′s i agree with l.n. parties have changed. obama’s decision does not apply to your self. illegals are not born in panama. its a politcal jump for obama. do some research today in this era middle class has a hard time trying to make a way for it self. we cannot make exceptions for politics. it has been 30 years with no tangibles for future legacies. madison as a whole has not changed in the last thirty years. the nation needs not to fight for the equal right campain. madison changes things that dont need to be changed. but dont change things that need to be
Nation above ideology? What a novel concept!
Unintended consequences: Between 1942 and 1964, millions of Mexican nationals came to the U.S. on short-term labor contrcts, which offered them much-needed work and economic opportunity. Their story reveals— the bracero program — an important but overlooked chaper in the history of the United States of American—a story which remains relevant today.
Legislation in Georgia and in Alabama has resulted in unintended consequences: a reduced labor force and reduced cultivated land. The Florida legislation did not pass similar legislation in the 2012 session.
Immigration was not monitored until the 19th century when passenger lists became important. Early immigrants had difficulties: Negro slaves were not recognized as citizens until the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were ratified.
Congress should address the issues rather than filibusting – making political statements.
The approach taken by the president is not unique to Obama. Now is the time for moving beyond rhetoric: debate the issues and vote the proposal up or down. This issue is another one when Congress should put pragmatism and facts ahead of ideology.
For the record: like Senator John McCain, I was born in the Panama Canal Zone. I have a Certificate of Citizenship to support the fact that my parents were U.S. citizens, entitling me to US citizenship. The issue for children of illegal immigrants born in the US is that they are entitled to US citizenship based on being born in the US. The president’s approach is conservative and begins to address issues. Congress should address this issue from the point of view that places the nation above ideology.
Might want to re-read what I said. Yes, almost the entire South was Democrat between the loss of the Civil War (to a Republican president) and 1964 when the whole shebang evacuated to the Republican side because of the Civil Rights Act originally proposed by JFK, passed by Congress and signed by Johnson (a Southern Democrat, by the way, who defied the fillibuster “in the memory of the slain president” and with overwhelming _national_ approbation–he won his own election in a landslide).
Then the Southern Democrats as a whole abandoned the national party en masse, just as Southerners “fled” to the Democratic party 100 years earlier when they lost the war. Local Democrats (or those who can conjure that “local” feel, like “Walkin’ Lawton”) still have a chance in the South if they are liked; legacies still have a chance if they are liked; Bill Nelson got elected because of his successful challenge to the big insurance companies as commissioner. However, other than that it is pretty hard for a Democrat to get anything in the South, either state or national, since 1964.
I was astonished when Obama took FL, but that was the triumph of the young people for whom 1964 is just a date in the history books and the minorities for whom it was a life-changing year. The generations for whom race is a formative political principle are dying though. In another 50 years, “the race card” (played or kept in the hole) will be as passe as rotary dial phones are today.
@LTML:
No, this has nothing to do with the President ignoring the Constitution. From the way I understand it, this is all about not punishing people for the sins of their parents. I think that the Constitution is pretty strong in that regard. We don’t punish innocent by-standers. Or, at least, we should certainly try real hard not to do so.
Don’t waste your time “concerned”. If you want people to come to the USA legally and follow the lawful process you are billed as insensible, inhumane, or lacking compassion. Eddie you are blinded by division based on income. This issue is about the President’s disregard for the the Constitution and his own precedent set forward by him in 2011. L.N. if you remember it was the Democrat party who stood in the door at the University of Alabama. It was the Democrat party who filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was the Democrat party who repeatedly elected Robert Byrd a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Do the names Jimmy Byrnes or Hugo Black mean anything?
@X Or according to your reasoning, it might have been a Republican (although I doubt it). But it certainly was NOT an Independent.
@X Musta been a Democrat, then, that wrote the poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, huh.
Let’s all get serious and admit to the facts over illegal immigration. Democratic politicians want the illegals to come in this country as they see them as “cheap votes” while Republican businessmen likewise want illegals to come into this country as they see them as “cheap labor.” Let’s stop kidding ourselves about either so-called major party. It is time all patriots in Madison County and elsewhere join the Independent Party.
@concerned:
What’s wrong with compassion? What’s wrong with just doing what’s right every once in a while?
If being compassionate and doing right do not fit with your definition of “FREEDOM AS WE KNOW IT”, then I don’t want to share in your “FREEDOM.” Your definition of “FREEDOM” reeks of elitism and is distasteful to civilized society.
Other than that…………………..you’re okay by me.
Yep, politics is always about pandering, or perhaps you had never noticed before. It’s not socialism though. It’s just sensible and humane.
Do you know, by the way, when almost the whole South changed from being all Democrat to being all Republican? 1964: (Democrats) Kennedy/Johnson Civil Rights Act. That act was sensible and humane also.
So.
This is so blatant a case of pandering, I think Obummer is feeling the heat and he needs all the votes he can get. He doesn’t care if the votes are legal or not. Come on people, we need to get rid of this socialist before we become a Greece or other socialist countries. FREEDOM AS WE KNOW IT IS FADING AWAY.
